Describe the NANOS Board using 3 words. Dedicated, Tireless, Committed

Tell us about your journey to the NANOS Board in 3 sentences. Recognizing NANOS as the educational and organizational voice for the field of neuro-ophthalmology, I became involved in committee work perhaps 20 years ago largely through the Practice Management arm. Later, I was named the alternate Councilor for NANOS to the AAO and subsequently served as the Councilor for 6 years. Thereafter, I was elected to the NANOS Board.

What did you enjoy most about your Board service? The camaraderie of being involved with a stellar group of dedicated individuals committed to the preservation and advancement of our sub-specialty and organization and the resultant support to our growing membership.

Based on your experience, what advice about Board service would you give to a new member of the Board? You have been selected for something special that you bring to the Board. Voice and apply that expertise throughout your tenure.

What do you wish you had known when you joined the Board but did not know? I was not aware of the incredible horizontal and vertical organizational structure of the Board’s committees spanning across the realms of education, advocacy, annual meeting planning and membership services.

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned about governance matters? I came to appreciate the need to achieve consensus after evaluating opposing viewpoints and not have decisions made in an autocratic manner.

What do you feel was the most meaningful aspect/contribution/part of being on the NANOS Board? Serving on the Board has been a most gratifying experience as it has enabled me to effect positive changes for our specialty and the NANOS membership by addressing the myriad of issues and concerns facing neuro-ophthalmology at large that are constantly being addressed by the Board.Working with others to advance the practice of Neuro-Ophthalmology, and helping with the NANOS Compensation Survey.
