Dr. Clare Fraser |
NANOS 2024 Merit Award recipient: Dr. Clare L. Fraser
Ophthalmology or Neurology? - Ophthalmology What was the best clinical pearl you learned in fellowship? - You have to let the patient finish talking. They are desperately trying to tell you what is wrong, and even if you can't help them, at least they will feel someone has listened all the way through their story which can be therapeutic enough. What do you know at this stage in your career that you wish you knew when you first joined NANOS? - That you can and should make surgery a part of a really rewarding neuro-ophthalmology career. Also, not to be afraid to talk to everyone, even the most senior members of NANOS have been approachable and helpful every time.

NEW KNOWLEDGE: In Neuro-Ophthalmology The first international consensus criteria (ICON) were applied to the prospective, global observation study of acute optic neuritis (ACON). In the study, only 50% of participants in #ACON fulfilled criteria for optic neuritis, mostly due to missing data (documentation of an RAPD, and/or dyschromatopsia). Even with evolving technologies such as #OCT, and MRI, the neuro-ophthalmological exam is still critical to accurate and timely diagnosis! Full Article
In what might be the biggest development for optic neuritis since the optic neuritis treatment trial, John Chen and colleagues were awarded a PCORI grant to study the role of PLEX in optic neuritis (TIMELY-PLEX). Congratulations and good luck team!
