National Update

VA proposed rule allowing health professions trainees to provide care via telehealth
In a comment letter on the Proposed Rule, the AMA expressed support for providing patients with access to health care services via telehealth, but also noted that the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) should consider the potential impact on care quality within any proposal that would expand the scope of practice for non-physicians including the Federal Supremacy Project.

AMA expresses concerns with disrupting physicians’ revenue
In a letter to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra, the AMA expressed serious concerns with recommendations made to HHS which would impact how physicians and their practices communicate and conduct business with health plans.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that tianeptine products have been linked to serious harm, overdose and death.

New AMA resource helps physician practices fight inappropriate E/M downcoding
In response to some health plans disputing evaluation and management (E/M) levels for submitted claims and implementing E/M downcoding programs that inappropriately reduce payment for provided services, the AMA has created a new resource to support physician practices in navigating these programs.

Differences in physician compensation methods
A new Policy Research Perspective uses AMA’s nationally representative Physician Practice Benchmark Survey to provide a detailed look at how physicians were compensated by their practices from 2012 to 2020.

Registration is now open for the AMA State Advocacy Summit, which will be held in person from Jan. 12-14, 2023, in Marana, Arizona. The conference offers physician leaders and medical society staff an opportunity to share their organizations’ state legislative and regulatory priorities, concerns, strategies and tactics with advocacy leaders from other medical societies.

Imposter phenomenon in U.S. physicians relative in the U.S. working population
A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings and co-authored by AMA team members Christine Sinsky, MD, Michael Tutty, PhD, and Lindsey Carlasare aims to determine the prevalence of imposter phenomenon experiences among physicians and evaluate their relationship to personal and professional characteristics, professional fulfillment, burnout and suicidal ideation.

DEA drug take back day
Oct. 29: The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will hold “Drug Take Back” events around the country on Oct. 29. The DEA’s Take Back website has a “collection site locator” and other resources. For general information about safe drug storage and disposal, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has helpful information about where and how to dispose of unused medicines. The AMA strongly encourages physicians to talk to their patients about safe storage of prescription medicine and the importance of disposal of unused and unwanted prescriptions.

Integrating psychopharmacology into primary care: When and how
Nov. 17: In this webinar on Nov. 17 at 10:00 a.m. Central time, experts will explore available tools and resources to assist physicians in determining the need for a psychopharmacological intervention, along with key steps and interventions physicians can take to address routine and complex behavior health conditions. Jan. 12-14, 2023: More than 200 physician leaders and medical society staff attend the annual AMA State Advocacy Summit. The conference offers participants an opportunity to share their organizations' state legislative and regulatory priorities, concerns, strategies and tactics with advocacy leaders from other medical societies. Conference content focuses on key health care issues that states will likely address in the coming legislative sessions. Next year’s in-person event will take place from Jan. 12-14 at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain in Marana, AZ.
