MEET NANOS 2022-2024 PRESIDENT

Meet NANOS Board is a section of the NANOS Spotlight, Society Newsletter, where we feature interviews with former and current Board members. Through these features, members will learn about the function of the Board, how to get involved, nominated, or chosen for future Board positions. This July, we feature an interview with NANOS President Prem Subramanian, MD, PhD

Here's Dr. Subramanian's interview:

What are your main 3 goals for your term as NANOS President?

1. Advocating for the profession of neuro-ophthalmology: Obtaining additional support from parent societies and closely aligned subspecialties as well as AUPO to help our members succeed academically and financially in both university and private practice settings.
2. Increasing NANOS’ impact and visibility: Broaden our influence through engagement of our international members in our educational mission; we also should consider novel means to improve neuro-ophth education worldwide (especially in underserved areas).
3. NANOS for all: Continuing to ensure full membership representation on committees and the Board and identifying gaps to fill.

Where do you see NANOS in 5 years?
NANOS will represent a broader range of neuro-ophthalmologists, and our international presence will assume a larger part of what we do. However, we will maintain our focus on supporting our US and Canadian members, who will still be the largest group and have specific needs for practice support and advocacy.

What is the main challenge the Board is facing right now?
Our strength is also our challenge, and that is the growing popularity of our meeting and our growing membership of physicians who may practice neuro-ophthalmology differently than we think of it traditionally. Our members will be mixing neuro-ophthalmic practice with clinical and non-clinical activities that enhance their lives and those of their patients. We need to ensure we are using NANOS resources to support our members in all facets of education and practice.

What motivates you personally to participate as a volunteer leader in NANOS?
Neuro-ophthalmology and NANOS are inseparable to me, and serving this organization is also serving my patients and profession.

What was your busiest day as a NANOS Board member?
It’s a tie between finalizing all of the committee assignments and figuring out if our all-virtual 2021 meeting would actually run well and succeed (I think it did!).

What advice would you give to someone coming into a board for the first time?
Speak up and contribute. There is often consensus on many issues but there are legitimate areas of uncertainty where debate and free exchange of ideas are always needed. You were elected to the Board because you have skills that are valued- use them!

July 1 is when NANOS Board and Committee rotations officially took effect per NANOS Bylaws.

NANOS COMMITTEE UPDATES
Did you know that NANOS has 40+ committees and taskforces? 
NANOS is proud of and grateful for having so many engaged volunteers who are passionate about advancing our mission. All our volunteers are the blood vessels of our organization. All that NANOS does ties back to their ongoing efforts and hard work behind the scenes. 

Did you know that NANOS committees and taskforces exist to support NANOS’s mission, strategic plan and goals? The major function of committees is to assist the Board of Directors by providing information gathered through research or develop products or services that advance NANOS’s mission and enhance the member benefits and value of the organization. The committees’ course of action comes either through the strategic plan, Board direction or through an identified membership need.

NANOS AND THE AMA
Did you know NANOS has a vote in the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates (HOD), which has over 650 members who meet twice annually to conduct the business of the AMA? NANOS gained a seat in the House of Delegate (HOD) through our membership in the Specialty and Service Society (SSS), which is the overarching organization for specialty and subspecialty groups. 

Dr. Ben Frishberg is NANOS AMA Delegate. He attended the AMA meeting in Chicago last month and has a message for you. Click here to read his report about the work AMA does and how it is relevant to Neuro-Ophthalmology.

NEW! PATIENT BROCHURE INFOGRAPHICS
Patient Brochure Infographics for clinician distribution are now available on the NANOS website.

Please note that these infographics are for clinicians to use in clinical practice as a simple, one-page document to give to patients (particularly those looking for trusted information on the Internet regarding their symptoms or disorder). The patient can scan the QR code or type one or more of the web addresses into a web browser for access to a brochure with more information and links to trusted sources of additional information. Please note that the infographic file contains a white box in the upper right corner where clinicians are encouraged to insert their own institutional logo.

WIN BOOK CLUB

Be sure to join the next WIN Leadership Book Club on Sunday, August 14 at 2pm PST/5pm EST. Selected book will focus on how to improve leadership presence in the workplace, strengthen diplomatic skills, improve negotiations, foster mentorship, and improve relationships.

NANOS is committed to promoting medical education and the exchange of scientific information in order to support our primary mission of achieving excellence in patient care through the support and promotion of education. In addition, NANOS is committed to promoting collaboration among medical specialties, and among healthcare providers in different parts of the world who share our values.

NANOS will promote meetings of interest to neuro-ophthalmologists on the “Other Meetings of Interest” webpage if the following two criteria are met:

1. A NANOS member is chairing/organizing a session of the meeting.
2. The program is of neuro-ophthalmologic interest.
