NANOS Statement on Gun Violence

North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS) stands with our partner organizations, American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and supports the American College of Physicians’ policy position paper on reducing firearm injury and death as well as the AAO’s statement on Gun Violence.

Gun violence is a serious public health issue. Increased funding for research into causes and the effectiveness of interventions is important to better understand the causes and consequences of firearm-related injury and death and to identify, test, and implement strategies to reduce these events.

Our members and members of our partner organizations see firsthand the consequences of gun violence, including the loss of life and sight.

Therefore, NANOS joins other national societies, including the AAO, AAN and American Medical Association (AMA), in supporting safety and mitigation measures, which include background checks for purchase, federal requirements for safe firearm storage, enhanced mental health services, enforcement of extreme risk protection orders, repeal of physician counseling gag laws and control of access to high-capacity weapons.
