VOLUNTEER CORNER - NANOS HEROES

*NEW* NANOS Heroes Corner is the section of the NANOS Spotlight dedicated to NANOS volunteers. Here we will interview members who have made extraordinary contributions of time, energy, and resources to NANOS and have contributed to the overall success and growth of our organization. Meet our June hero, Dr. Sachin Kedar!

DR. SACHIN KEDAR, NANOS AMBASSADOR AND 2019 MERIT AWARD WINNER

Sachin Kedar, MD, MBBS

Ophthalmology or Neurology? I am board certified in Neurology (ABPN), Ophthalmology (Medical Council of India) and clinical neurophysiology (ABPN)

What was the best clinical pearl you learned in fellowship?
I have a collection or pearls from my time with Nancy Newman, Valerie Biousse and James Corbett, but two stand out.
a.    Insist that a transesophageal echocardiogram be performed in an embolic central retinal artery occlusion despite a “normal transthoracic echocardiogram”.
b.    The other is a Corbettism “Everyone in the world has syphilis but you and me; I know about me but not about thee”, a comment made when I failed to test for syphilis in a 60 year old with papilledema, who as it turned out had neurosyphilis.

What are the top 3 things you’ve learned over the last 5 years?

  • There is no such thing as a “perfect practice”; you have to adapt to the needs of your group and community
  • Build or join an inter-professional collaborative group in your area of interest; it expands your horizon and it is lots of fun.
  • Set aside and jealously guard personal or family time- it is not easy till you decide it is important for you

Tell us about your involvement with NANOS! Although I have volunteered on several committees, my primary involvement with NANOS has been in the education arm, more recently as Chair of curriculum committee. This was a natural fit for me given my background as residency program director throughout my academic career. I gained unique skills-set in each of these roles which has been professionally rewarding. More importantly, I made new friends, gained mentors, built collaborations and worked with some wonderful, like-minded members of the NANOS community.

What would you say to members who want to be more involved in NANOS? NANOS will let you explore, build and enhance your unique interests and skills-set, and also provide you mentors to be successful. Please reach out, we value your input.

What do you know at this stage in your career that you wish you knew when you first joined NANOS? If you have an idea or proposal for NANOS, do not hesitate to pitch. NANOS leaders are but a call/message/email/tweet away.

COMMITTEE CORNER - PATIENT INFORMATION COMMITTEE

Kevin E. Lai, MD

*NEW* In the Committee Corner section of the NANOS Spotlight we'll be highlighting the work NANOS committees are doing and sharing the recent accomplishments or challenges that our volunteers have battled. The June issue features the NANOS Patient Information Committee chaired by Kevin E. Lai, MD.

Here's Kevin's report:

Committee Purpose? To develop and maintain up-to-date, accurate, and relevant educational materials for our neuro-ophthalmology patients.

Exemplary Committee Members? Everyone has been working very hard to provide an excellent, high-quality product to give our patients!

Recent Achievements?

  • Addition of an Editorial Board to complete final reviews of all revisions and new brochures to ensure accuracy
  • Development of a standardized format for the brochures to maintain uniformity on the NANOS website and in PDF formats
  • Revision of the patient information main page of the NANOS website
  • We are completing revisions and edits on 13 of the existing patient brochures
  • The revised pituitary tumor brochure is now available in web form and in PDF format

Future Goals?

  • Development of one-page "infographics" that can be easily printed out for patients
  • Working with the Informatics Committee to help provide tools for integrating patient information brochure information into the major EHRs
  • Developing new brochures for other common neuro-ophthalmic conditions
  • Brainstorming new ideas for clinically useful patient information

PRACTICE SUPPORT COMMITTEE UPDATE

PRACTICE SUPPORT TOOLS

Larry Frohman and the NANOS Practice Support & Carrier Relations Committee have created a document for use.  NANOS members may be experiencing problems of RFNL OCTs being denied by Medicare even with accepted OCT codes if the OCTs are performed more than twice per year.  Because we understand that in neuro-ophthalmology OCTs may be needed more frequently than this, this letter can be adapted to fit the needs of the physician and submitted for purposes of obtaining authorization for reimbursement.

NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY UPCOMING EVENTS

The National Eye Institute (NEI) is hosting a workshop on Neuro-Ophthalmic Disease Clinical Trial Endpoints: Optic Neuropathies this June. The workshop will address endpoints for clinical trials of therapies for neuro-ophthalmic diseases, such as glaucoma, intracranial hypertension, and multiple sclerosis. Sessions will summarize lessons learned from past trials, including clinical trials for neurological conditions unrelated to vision; the utility of functional endpoints; issues specific to neuro-ophthalmology; and other topics.
