NANOS SPOTLIGHT IN JANUARY - VIDEO RECAP FROM DR. ANDREW LEE, NANOS PRESIDENT

VOLUNTEER CORNER - NANOS HEROES

Meet our January hero, Dr. Peter Quiros!

DR. PETER QUIROS, NANOS AMBASSADOR, WALSH COMMITTEE CHAIR AND NANOS SECRETARY

Peter Quiros, MD, Chair, Walsh Committee and NANOS Secretary

Ophthalmology or Neurology? Ophthalmology

What was the best clinical pearl you learned in fellowship?
Always review the MRI images. Countless “normal" MRIs are not.

What are the top 3 things you’ve learned over the last 5 years?
1. Listen to the patient their answers to your questions nearly always reveal the diagnosis.
2. Avoid making therapeutic decisions based on one errant lab value or visual field, repeat the test.
3. Foster the relationships with your colleagues and trainees. It not only helps you avoid cognitive bias and see other points of view; but also makes you a better physician and mentor.

Tell us about your involvement with NANOS!
I wanted to be involved with NANOS from day 1. To a new Neuro-ophthalmologist what could be more exciting than an entire organization dedicated to Neuro-ophthalmology filled with brilliant, energetic people. My involvement with NANOS has been some of the most rewarding work of my entire career. I would not feel as fulfilled without it.

What would you say to members who want to be more involved in NANOS?
Speak up, tell a board member or officer you want to be involved and we will make it happen. One of my mentors always said, “the world is run by those that show up.” Just do it.

What do you know at this stage in your career that you wish you knew when you first joined NANOS? NANOS is for everyone. Its easy to feel intimidated early on because there are so many intelligent and well-known professionals. But guess what, you are one of them as well. We are all here because of our love of Neuro-ophthalmology. NANOS is Neuro-ophthalmology.

COMMITTEE CORNER: ABSTRACT COMMITTEE UPDATE

Heather Moss, MD, Chair, Abstract Committee

COMMITTEE PURPOSE?

To present the premier exhibition of cutting edge neuro-ophthalmic research at the NANOS annual meeting and to reward scientific achievement and presentations by trainees.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENT(S) OR UPDATE(S)?

Since the abstract deadline in October, the committee has been hard at work, reviewing over 300 phenomenal abstract submissions (this is a record number of submissions).  Through blinded review and a multi-hour conference call we selected outstanding research for oral presentation at three platform sessions and by poster presentation at two sessions at the NANOS 2020 Annual Meeting. As part of this process we also selected nominees for best abstract by a student, resident and fellow awards. We’ve organized talks and posters into coherent topic groups to facilitate viewing by meeting attendees and networking between authors.

EXEMPLARY COMMITTEE MEMBER(S)

All members of the committee dedicate hours and hours of their time in November/December to review and discuss the abstracts.  A special thank you to Dr. Beau Bruce, who pre-reviewed every single abstract to ensure correct categorization and lack of content violations.  Another special thank you to Tara Thebeau in the NANOS office, who keeps everything organized and on schedule.

FUTURE GOAl(S)?

We, like all of you, are also looking forward to being inspired by and enjoy learning from the posters and talks.  However, our work is not entirely done - at the annual meeting we will select the winners of the best abstract awards and present them at the annual banquet. We will also work to push neuro-ophthalmic research updates to social media from the annual meeting.

We strive to constantly improve the fairness and rigor of the abstract evaluation process.  For the past few years we have had every committee member evaluate all abstracts interested in platform presentation which has generated a broad cross sectional evaluation of the scientific merit and audience interest in the study.  While this approach has been valuable to putting together a great program, as the number of abstracts grows, it leads to reviewer fatigue.  We are brainstorming ways to achieve a broad evaluation while not over-taxing our committed volunteers.

WHY DONATE TO NANOS

"I became a neuro-ophthalmologist because my experiences with NANOS members in medical school were some of the most altruistic and caring of all the doctors I had ever worked with. I found my tribe, motivated to take care of the sickest and most complex patients in ophthalmology, who often see multiple specialists before coming to a final diagnosis and who really need doctors that are willing to take the time and effort to advocate for patients with diseases most others do not understand or treat. NANOS has provided a professional community of the highest educational and research standards for me to continue lifelong learning and to be the best and most empathetic doctor I can be. I feel blessed to have realized this in training in a climate of rapid evolution in modern medical care. NANOS keeps me honest and wise!"

— Kimberly M. Winges, a long-time member of NANOS and 2020 Merit Award recipient
