CME Lunch Symposium: Join Prem S. Subramanian, MD, PhD; Marc Dinkin, MD; and Madhura A. Tamhankar, MD on Tuesday, 3/5 for this CME lunch symposium on thyroid eye disease (TED). We will be addressing the pathogenesis and involvement of the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor in TED, summarizing best practices for diagnosis and treatment, analyzing real-world evidence for the safety and efficacy of current therapies, as well as examining case presentations on the diagnosis and treatment of TED to improve the overall care and management of patients with this disease.

ADVOCACY CORNER:

$15 billion win for physicians on prior authorization

What’s the news: Under the leadership of Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released a final rule making important reforms to prior authorization to cut patient care delays and electronically streamline the process for physicians. Together, the changes will save physician practices an estimated $15 billion over 10 years, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Read more here.

NEW KNOWLEDGE: This study reports prevalence of PHOMS in acute NAION affected eye > acute NAION fellow eye, > chronic NAION > controls, with > 10% controls having PHOMS. This data provides additional food for thought on the origin and implications of PHOMS. Read More 

REVIEW: TOP NEW KNOWLEDGE READS OF 2023

Thaller et al examined the effect of pregnancy on disease course in patients with IIH in this prospective observational cohort study. IIH diagnosed during pregnancy was rare, making up only 1.6% of this 377 person cohort. In patients with established IIH preceding or following pregnancy, pregnancy did not adversely affect overall longitudinal visual outcomes. Read More

A prospective study found that 15% (3/20) of young patients with transient vision loss had abnormal findings on further investigations. These patients should be referred for neuroimaging and cardiac workup so that treatments can be initiated to prevent complications. Read More
