Celebrating Life of Dr. James Corbett

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

It is with a great sadness I report to you all we have lost a great colleague and friend, Dr. James Corbett.  He died on April 2nd at age 83 with this family (Joyce, John, Jennifer, Jack) at his side.  James was known for his pioneering work studying idiopathic intracranial hypertension.  He dedicated his research to this topic throughout his career.  He was an outstanding teacher — with a great grasp of neuro-anatomy, changes of the optic disc, and practical neuro-ophthalmology.  In fact, he was made an Honorary Member of the American Neurological Association.   He also championed many of us to study headache medicine.    He trained so many students, residents, fellows throughout his career at Will’s Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, University of Iowa Neurology and Ophthalmology departments, and University of Mississippi as Chair of Neurology.  He was generous with attribution and never let a moment go by without dropping a pearl at our feet.  He was a major supporter of NANOS throughout his career — as it started as the Rocky Mountain Neuro-ophthalmology Society to the formation of NANOS.  He was on the Board of Directors (1985-1996) and received the Distinguished Service Award to NANOS in 2017.  He was married to Joyce for over 60 years.  He will be greatly missed by all of us.
