John Chen, MD, PhD Graduates from AAO Leadership Development Program
On Saturday, December 5, Dr. Chen participated in a final, virtual session completing his participation in the Academy’s Leadership Development Program XXII, Class of 2020. Dr. Chen was part of a select group of twenty participants chosen for the LDP XXII, Class of 2020 from among a large group of physicians who were nominated by state, subspecialty and specialized interest societies. The class also included a participant from Serbia who was nominated by the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE).

Dr. Chen began his leadership development journey in November 2019 with an orientation session held during AAO 2019 in San Francisco. In January 2020, Dr. Chen took part in a 2½ day interactive session in San Francisco covering a wide variety of leadership and association management topics. The class also visited AAO headquarters to hear from the 2020 Academy President Anne L. Coleman, MD, PhD, CEO David Parke II, MD and Academy Vice Presidents on key priorities for the Academy. They also stopped by the offices of Ophthalmic Mutual Insurance Company (OMIC) to hear from CEO Tim Padovese on how OMIC collaborates on Cooperative Ventures with state and subspecialty/specialized interest societies. This LDP class was the first to experience the Academy’s new Truhlsen-Marmor Museum of the Eye which was still ‘under development’ during their visit.

The next LDP event was to have been the Academy’s Mid-Year Forum 2020 in Washington D.C., in April, but the event was unfortunately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Instead, LDP participants were encouraged to attend the virtual Hill Day on May 12, at which Dr. Chen and other ophthalmologists met with Minnesota Members of Congress and their staff to discuss issues important to ophthalmology. Next, the Academy held a virtual LDP session on June 9, Get Politically Active. During the June 9 session, Dr. Chen and his LDP colleagues heard from Bill Clifford, MD, an ophthalmologist and LDP alumnus with years of advocacy experience at the state and federal levels and who was running for U.S. Congress in Kansas’ first district. Dr. Clifford shared insights on running for elected office, building effective relationships with legislators and how best to advocate on behalf of patients. LDP participants also shared their personal experiences regarding the virtual Hill Day.

Dr. Chen had the opportunity to learn from the leaders of AAO, meet a wonderful class of LDP colleagues, and felt the experience was invaluable. During the LDP year, he contributed to the NANOS pipeline task force towards a goal of increasing recruitment into the field of Neuro-ophthalmology. Look for good things from Dr. Chen in the future!
